Submission Guidelines

What's going on in your life, your community, your world, your head? What are women doing? What are we creating? We want to listen to the music, see the art, read the writing. We want to hear about women's triumphs, failures, ways of expression, ways of coping. We want to hear about what bothers you, what builds you up. We want to hear about what makes you laugh, cry, or cry laughing.


Please send us: Queries for interesting feature pieces (1,000-2,000 words) and short pieces (500-1,000 words) or completed features or short pieces:

about things that are relevant to you

that connect, spark debate, encourage laughter, shed some light

about your community

about world events

about things you are passionate about, that you'd like to explore, debate, discuss, air.


Subjects we're into (but not restricted to):

health, sex, marriage, being single, motherhood, social commentary, education, business, law, the arts, friendship, travel, the environment, work, social issues, culture, community, finances, balancing life, adventure, world issues, politics, and popular culture.
You know, stuff that actually matters.

We're also interested in the following:

Creative pieces: including original poetry, lifewriting, plays, etc.

Visual Art: including paintings, drawings, pictures of three-dimensional pieces, prints, photography, etc.

What do you want to see in our pages? Remember, this is a magazine for you. Snail mail or submit all suggestions for feature articles, books to review, columns you'd like to see, and so on.

Payment

Since we are a fairly new publication, we don't presently have the ability to pay cash for the submissions we choose to print; but we want to offer you an alternative form of compensation for your work.

We're looking for writers who want to join the Cahoots community and participate in this conversation we're calling a magazine. So, in exchange for your piece, and in the spirit in which this magazine was created, we want to offer our writers the opportunity to network, to become part of a community of women writers and artists and just overall cool women, to connect. Upon publication, we will provide a full bio including photo with links to your website on our Contributors page and the opportunity to be a Featured Writer on our front page. Our hope is that this exposure will provide you with further writing prospects and drive traffic to your own website as well as the opportunity to network with other creative, thinking women. Who knows? Perhaps you may find that perfect business partner you've been searching for or the ideal supplier for your new construction company! Perhaps you'll simply get the feedback for your work you've been needing to hear.

If you have a website, book, business, or project to promote, we will also provide you with a free standard ad space for a period of one month. Ultimately, we want to work together with our contributors to create a mutually beneficial source of promotion for all our endeavours. Let's work together to put something out there that is about more than how we look or what we buy!

Looking to submit some fiction?

We are not accepting fiction submissions at this time. Please keep an eye on our Contests page for news of upcoming Fiction Contests.

Please DO NOT send us:

Empty, regurgitated pieces about losing weight, pleasing men in bed, finding a man, makeovers, 7 steps to happiness, fashion that is priced way over anything an average woman's income will allow...we know you know what we mean.

Dos and Don'ts

If submitting by snail mail, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) or an email address. Whether submitting by snail mail or electronic submission, be sure to include a cover letter and all pertinent contact information. We treat online submissions as we do mailed submissions and require the same professional presentation of your work and quality of work as we do our snail-mailed submissions.

Please submit work in Times New Roman 12 point font, and be sure your name and the title of the piece is on each page of your submission.

If you have visuals for your article(s), please do send them along. Upload them separately using the form below and indicate what article they belong to in the comments box.

We accept simultaneous submissions and previously published pieces - just be sure to indicate in the comments box if your submission is a simultaneous submission or if it has been previously published (when and where).

We will be sure to inform you as to the status of your submission once all editorial decisions have been made, but only can do so if you include email contact information (or, in the case of hardcopy submissions, an SASE). If you would like to receive communication regarding the status of your submission but do not need the submission itself returned, please state this in your cover letter.

Please be aware that we have a small staff and read many submissions every month; in order for us to give each submission the attention it deserves, it may take us up to 3 months to get back to you about your submission. Thank you in advance for your patience.

If submitting online, please be sure to send your file to us in one of the following formats: .txt, .doc, .rtf, .jpg, or .jpeg. Files submitted in other formats might be accessible to us, but if they are not, we will not be able to consider them. So please make sure the file format is okay before you upload it.

Submissions received too close to publication date for a themed issue will not be usable in that issue.

Online Submissions

Please fill out the form below. This will help ensure that your submission gets to the right person on the Cahoots staff.

Important! We are no longer accepting submissions pasted into the comments line. Please do not paste your submissions into the comments line, but attach your file to the form below. If pasted, your submission will arrive in a mess and will not be read.

Select your file for upload. When you click here you will be able to select the file you wish to upload from your computer. To ensure accessibility, please use traditional filename standards, ie. do not use a space within filenames, but rather an underscore or dash. You may have to first rename the file on your computer, then upload it to this form.

For example: "wonder worker.doc" is unacceptable, while "wonder_worker.doc" is fine.

As noted above, we accept files in .rtf, .doc, .txt, .jpg, and .jpeg formats. While the system may allow you to upload other formats, they will be deleted upon receipt, and no communication will follow. Please ensure your file formats are acceptable before uploading.

All submissions may take up to 3 months of review before a response will be sent to you. Thank you for sharing your work with Cahoots!
