The Mother of All Presses

Focusing specifically on the topic of motherhood/mothering, Demeter Press is an important, original voice in the publishing world. A division of the Association for Research and Mothering (ARM), Demeter Press ensures that the varied and powerful voices of mothers and the complex experience of mothering is brought from the isolated realm of personal experience into the public eye. It insists that such experiences are important, powerful, valid, and relevant to the academic and personal world, to the human condition.

Headed by accomplished professor and writer, Andrea O'Reilly, ARM also puts out an amazing journal edited by an extensive editorial collective.

"The Journal of the Association for Research on Mothering is an integral part of community building for researchers, academics and activists, and mothers interested in the topic of motherhood. The mandate of the Journal is to publish the most current, high quality scholarship on mothering-motherhood and to ensure that this scholarship considers motherhood in an international context and from a multitude of perspectives including differences of class, race, sexuality, age, ethnicity, ability and nationality.

Each issue of the Journal highlights a particular motherhood theme or topic and showcases the newest and best in maternal scholarship and features numerous book reviews. Furthermore, through poetry, photography, and artwork, the Journal gives voice to women's lived experiences of mothering in all their complexity and diversity."

ARM hosts conferences on varying themes surrounding the experience of motherhood/mothering. They also host Mother Outlaws, "community gatherings in the Toronto area for women interested in discussing current motherhood issues from a feminist perspective and sharing the links between their own mothering practices and social change. The gatherings primarily occur at members' homes in the Toronto area for a potluck dinner and informal discussion on a specific topic or at scheduled special events."

So, read the books and the journal, go to the gatherings or start your own in your area, stimulate your brain, give voice to the most important job one can take on. Be proud of your accomplishments as a mother and the accomplishments of other mothers because taking notice of these accomplishments is worth our breath, our conversation, our ink and sweat and time and study. It's a life's work.

Carla Atherton
About the author:

Carla Atherton is a writer and all-round compulsive creator. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Arts in English from the University of Saskatchewan, the work for which was squeezed between writing, mothering, building a house, and starting (ad)ventures. She founded and currently edits and manages Cahoots Magazine and is currently working at Athabasca University in their Women's Studies Department. She also develops and teaches creative writing workshops to people 6-75 and is presently working on a novel (isn't everyone?). Her creative work has appeared in various literary journals, and her thesis-turned-book was published in September 2008 under the title The Poetry of Motherhood. Carla has been a greeting card writer and designer, teacher, researcher, business owner, writer, editor, and publisher. She lives and works in Saskatoon with her three young children, Nicholas, Olivia, and Isabel, and husband, Brent. Carla can most often be found harried and haggard decked out in a babushka and yoga pants feeding watermelon to her children, niece, and the dozens of children in her neighborhood.

Along with acting as Cahoots Magazine's editor-in-chief, Carla writes an arts and entertainment column called Inspired (formerly known as Escapes) and a new column/blog/blurting-out-of-thoughts called Chronicles of a Wannabe Bushwoman for the magazine.

Editor Notes

Editor's Note

  • As the old wisdom states: in order to understand the future, you need to understand the past. How true is that? The past entices learning, reminds us of what to do and what not to do, teaches us valuable lessons, and shows us from where we have come and how far. Women suffragists have blazed trails for our future, herbal women have taught us how to heal and nurture ourselves, our travels have taught us to value what we have or to reach for a better future, and our innermost desires poke to the surface reminding us to act, that there is more we want to do. Of course, we need to look toward the future, but the wisdom of the past must always be our companion.
