I May See You Again, Five Doors Open PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mary Pickett

A door opens to a master bedroom and
morning sunlight spreads across the sheets
where lay open a paperback
beside a sleepy woman who waits for her caregiver.
She is remembering a story in which

a door opens to a local tavern and
afternoon daylight falls on the table
where rests a spider mum in a glass tube
before a young woman who waits for her lover.
She is not yet aware of the story in which

a door opens to a softly lit office and
the lamp shines on the coffee table
where sits a box of tissue
beside a sad woman who waits for her therapist.
She is hiding a story in which

a door opens to a small house in the desert and
evening light filters through the window shade
where lies an open folder of poems
before a patient woman who waits for her next image.
She has been reading a story in which

a door stands open to an abandoned shack and
moonlight scatters in the debris on the broken floor
where falls an empty tin can
before a hiding woman who waits for her escape.
She is becoming her story.

Editor's Note

  • As the old wisdom states: in order to understand the future, you need to understand the past. How true is that? The past entices learning, reminds us of what to do and what not to do, teaches us valuable lessons, and shows us from where we have come and how far. Women suffragists have blazed trails for our future, herbal women have taught us how to heal and nurture ourselves, our travels have taught us to value what we have or to reach for a better future, and our innermost desires poke to the surface reminding us to act, that there is more we want to do. Of course, we need to look toward the future, but the wisdom of the past must always be our companion.
