Sunset Pyre PDF Print E-mail
Written by Suma Kinkar

When Mother died, she was draped
in a crisp white cotton sheet and placed
on a bed of humble yellow marigolds
with solely her face
staging a glimpse of
her uncorrupted calmness;

When it was time
for what was left of her
--To Leave
Father lifted her limp hand
and kissed it one very last time
then caressed her soft pale face
in his rough hands and started to
sob.
His three children watched him
Wide eyed;
for they never knew
he could cry like he did.
As they looked at their dead Mother
they could have sworn that
they saw her smile.

When Father lit her pyre at sunset
It crackled and hissed as
all of her blazed to dust;
Save her smile
that had been etched eternally
Into three throbbing hearts.

Editor's Note

  • As the old wisdom states: in order to understand the future, you need to understand the past. How true is that? The past entices learning, reminds us of what to do and what not to do, teaches us valuable lessons, and shows us from where we have come and how far. Women suffragists have blazed trails for our future, herbal women have taught us how to heal and nurture ourselves, our travels have taught us to value what we have or to reach for a better future, and our innermost desires poke to the surface reminding us to act, that there is more we want to do. Of course, we need to look toward the future, but the wisdom of the past must always be our companion.
