For most people, unassisted childbirth is something that takes place only in tribal and third world countries where women do not have access to medical care, or accidentally during speedy deliveries. It is not, in their opinion, something any sane woman would choose to do, as birth is a dangerous circumstance that a woman would not want to experience without the proper medical professionals standing by.

One of the first pieces of advice my mother gave me after I moved away from home was to avoid sitting down on public toilet seats. This advice came in the form of a newspaper clipping, which she mailed to me after I'd gone off to university. In the clipping, a doctor explained that many women have been taught not to sit down on public toilet seats, for good reason. The article recommended that women squat above the toilet rather than risk infections by coming into contact with the seat.

Just last weekend we were at a friend's acreage for supper. They live not far from the city, and on a day-to-day basis, and like most of us, they live a fast life -- one an environmental studies researcher at a university (who travels quite a lot for work), the other an engaged and hands-on preschool teacher, and parents to two children and a dog. Both of their children go to school, and as most people are in our culture, they are busy with extra-curricular activities and friends and responsibilities and work. But this piece is not about them, but the dinner we had with them one Saturday evening.

The past entices learning, reminds us of what to do and what not to do, teaches us valuable lessons, and shows us from where we have come and how far. Women suffragists have blazed trails for our future, herbal women have taught us how to heal and nurture ourselves, our travels have taught us to value what we have or to reach for a better future, and our innermost desires poke to the surface reminding us to act, that there is more we want to do. Of course, we need to look toward the future, but the wisdom of the past must always be our companion.
